Adolfo Urso, Italy’s Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT), met with Indian Ambassador H.E. Vani Rao at Palazzo Piacentini-Vaccaro, the headquarters of the MIMIT, to discuss enhancing bilateral cooperation and strengthening the industrial and commercial partnership between the two countries. “We aim to increase mutual investments and strategic collaboration, focusing on key sectors such as critical raw materials, microchips, steel, space, and AI,” stated Urso. This meeting reflects the positive momentum in Italy-India relations, further solidified by the joint declaration signed earlier this year by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni.
The upcoming visit of the training ship Amerigo Vespucci to India will provide additional opportunities for dialogue, particularly on the maritme security sector. But Italy and India also shared the aim to developing the so called “Cotton Route,” a complementary initiative to the Silk Road that aims to bolster value chains between the two nations.
In recent years, Italy and India have significantly deepened their relationship. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to India earlier this year marked a pivotal moment, resulting in an agreement to strengthen cooperation in technology, energy, and infrastructure. Both countries share an interest in diversifying supply chains, especially in strategic sectors like microchips and critical raw materials, to reduce reliance on external actors and enhance economic and industrial security.
As Vas Shenoy highlighted in an article in the Economic Times, Italy and India seek to diversify their partnerships in strategic areas such as energy and technology. Italy views India as a crucial partner for expanding its presence in Asia, while India considers Italy a strategic interlocutor for access to advanced technologies and the European market. This collaborative framework is also extending into the space and AI sectors, where both countries see significant opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.
In this context, the so called “Cotton Route” initiative represents a valuable opportunity to further strengthen economic and cultural ties between Italy and India, integrating commercial and logistical infrastructures connecting Europe and Asia with a shared vision of sustainable growth and economic security.
