Shri Suresh Gopi, India’s Minister of State for Tourism, attended the G7 Tourism Ministers Meeting in Florence, where he took the opportunity to connect with the Indian community in Italy. “On this occasion, he interacted with the vibrant Indian community and encouraged them to promote India as a niche tourist destination under #ChaloIndia,” wrote Indian Embassy in Italy on X.

Minister Gopi’s proactive approach fostering international collaborations underscores the importance of tourism as a pillar of India’s economy and a means of projecting soft power on the global stage.

Chalo India: Showcasing India’s Diversity and Authentic Experiences

“Chalo India,” meaning “Let’s Go to India” in Hindi, is a campaign launched by India’s Ministry of Tourism to inspire both international tourists and the Indian diaspora to explore and promote India as a unique travel destination. The initiative aims to highlight India’s rich cultural diversity, historical wealth, natural beauty, and authentic experiences, with a focus on lesser-known destinations and niche tourism sectors, such as spiritual, adventure, medical, and culinary tourism.

Tourism as an Economic Engine and Soft Power Tool

Tourism is crucial to India’s economy, significantly contributing to the country’s GDP. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the tourism sector contributed approximately 6.6% to India’s GDP in recent years and supported around 39.5 million jobs, making up 7.7% of total employment. This economic impact underscores tourism’s dual role as an economic driver and as a soft power asset, enhancing India’s global image and supporting its aspirations to become a superpower.

International Collaborations to Expand Tourism

On the sidelines of the G7 Tourism Ministers Meeting, Minister Gopi held a productive discussion with Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, H.E. Sherif Fathy. They explored the possibility of enhancing connectivity between India and Egypt and discussed collaboration in Ayurveda, wellness, and eco-tourism. These initiatives highlight India’s commitment to strengthening international relationships through tourism and to promoting sustainable and traditional practices that showcase the country’s cultural heritage.
