“We support Brazil’s initiative for a global alliance against hunger and poverty,” said the Indian Prime Minister, calling it an “important step” towards implementing the Deccan high-level principles for food security, adopted at the New Delhi Summit of G20 held last year.

Addressing the G20 session on “social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty,” Modi stated that countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertiliser crisis caused by global conflicts.

India’s leader flagged the priorities of the Global South at the G20 summit in Brazil, underlining one of the top priorities of his strategic agenda. During his address, the Indian Prime Minister noted that India had pulled 250 million people out of poverty in the last ten years and distributed free food grains to 800 million people there.

“Our discussions can only be successful,” Modi said, “when we keep in mind the challenges and priorities” of the Global South. He added, “We amplified the voice of the Global South” by granting permanent membership of G20 to the African Union during the New Delhi Summit.

India stands committed to promoting food security and eliminating poverty. We will build on our successes and harness our collective strength and resources to ensure a brighter future for all. Modi highlighted how India provides free ration to 800 million people, thus strengthening the fight against hunger. It also spoke about initiatives to ensure top quality and affordable healthcare for the poor and elderly, steps to boost financial self-reliance among women and provide food and nutritional security.

“He conveyed the many successes of India in reducing hunger and poverty. Numerous creative initiatives for the world to learn from,” said in an X’s post Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of IMF after a a meeting with PM Modi.

India operates under the guiding principles of “Back to Basics” and “March to Future.” Prime Minister Modi emphasises that advancements in this sector are pivotal for promoting sustainable development. Integrating foundational methodologies with forward-looking strategies is expected to yield significant benefits for long-term sustainability and progress.
